How do you prepare for a testosterone test?

Testosterone is one of the easier lab values to measure badly, because so many everyday things move it. Getting the conditions right is often the difference between a result you can trust and one that sends you down the wrong path.

Test in the morning. Testosterone follows a daily rhythm, peaking in the early morning and drifting down through the afternoon. An afternoon test can read a couple hundred ng/dL lower and manufacture a “low” result that is really just late timing. In younger men this rhythm is strong, so morning matters most.
